Habits that Damage your Brain

The brain is one of the control systems of your body that keeps it functioning to sustain life. Your brain is one of your most vital organs along with your heart. The brain is incredibly complex with 86 billion neurons. It stores all the experiences and information learned from the day you are born. You may not consciously remember them but they are there—buried deep within. So it makes sense to take good care of it. The problem is that most people do not even think about how their lifestyle affects their brain. You need to cultivate it to keep it as healthy as possible. But some of your daily habits may harm your brain and sometimes even cause permanent damage. Here are some of the daily bad habits to avoid to keep your brain healthy.

Rarely Interacting Affects the Brain

A lack of genuine social interaction can damage your brain health. And, no, interacting with friends of social media does not count. Good relationships are good for your brain and your health.Isolation negatively impacts your brain which can leave you feeling lonely. But these days we tend to substitute real relationships for likes on Facebook. While they may make you feel good for a moment, you probably do not know most of these people in real life. It is like being around a lot of people you do not feel connected to, you can still feel lonely in a crowd. Not actively talking or interacting with others means your brain cells become dormant and may cause your brain to shrink. But the opposite is true when you engage in meaningful conversations that require you to think deeply. It expands your mind which is essential to brain growth and development. This is why it is important to talk and interact with children from the time of birth in a meaningful way. It helps their brain development. Few real connections to others can make you feel lonely and lead to physical and mental health issues. Friends on social media cannot replace relationships with real people. So get off social media for a while and connect with the people who matter in your life. Spend quality time with friends and family. It is important to socialise to keep stimulating your brain. Lack of Sleep

A lack of sleep over too many nights can seriously affect your health negatively. Sleep is your body’s downtime and is vital to the healthy functioning of your brain and body. While you sleep, your skin and tissues renew, blood pressure drops, muscles relax and your energy restores. As you sleep your brain removes the build-up of toxins from during the day. So when you do not get enough sleep, you do not receive all these benefits. This can damage your body and brain and you may have a loss of brain cells which could lead to memory loss. Now you know why it is important to get around eight hours of sleep a day—to maintain an active, healthy brain. Make sure you have a good sleep routine to rejuvenate you to face each day.

Avoid Skipping Breakfast

Avoid Skipping Breakfast. Eating breakfast every morning is essential after fasting while asleep. It fuels your body and brain. Breakfast gives you the energy you need to get through the day. When you sleep, your body uses the nutrients from your last meal to sustain you overnight. So it is important to break your overnight fast even if you do not feel hungry. It gives your brain the nutrients it needs at the start of the day. When you continually skip breakfast over a long period of time, your brain may deteriorate due to a lack of nutrients it requires to function properly. It is also a great way to start each day with your family. Avoid Skipping Breakfast

Consuming too much Sugar

Consuming too much sugar is never good. Many foods we eat every day are laden with hidden sugar, so you can eat too much without even realising. It causes all sorts of health issues from diabetes to obesity. Consuming excessive sugar can also damage your brain over time. Too much sugar in your bloodstream prevents your body absorbing nutrients. This slows brain development as it does not get the nutrients it needs to operate properly. Try to avoid or limit foods high in sugar. Choose a healthy, balanced diet instead.

Drinking too Little Water

Your brain is 75 percent water so drinking too little water can have serious negative effects on your body. You can become dehydrated. This can occur quickly especially when it is hot or you are exercising. Dehydration affects your brain by slowing down blood circulation which slows down your thinking. It is thought that mild dehydration acts as a warning that you need to do something to rehydrate. As dehydration gets worse so too does your brain’s cognitive function. You may even become delirious. And if it advances in severity you may become unconscious and, worst case, go into a coma. Severe dehydration can cause physical and mental issues. You also need to drink enough water to regulate the operation of all parts of your body. It flushes out your kidneys which then work to filter the toxins from your blood. Drinking too Little Water

Prolonged Levels of Stress

Stress is a normal part of our busy lives. But prolonged levels of stress may damage your brain. When stress becomes chronic it makes you more susceptible to developing mental health conditions and may worsen existing conditions. It can also change your brain’s structure and functioning. Your brain produces myelin which is a layer of insulation that forms around the nerves of your spinal cord and brain, for example. When you have chronic stress it can cause the overproduction of myelin which disrupts your brain’s delicate balance. Living with too much stress can shrink your brain’s grey matter. This affects two areas—the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. The prefrontal cortex manages your emotions, actions and thoughts by communicating with other parts of your brain. The other area affected is your hippocampus which is central to memory and learning. So it is extremely important to reduce your stress to keep mind and body healthy.

Lack of Fresh Air

Not getting enough fresh air can reduce the oxygen that reaches your brain This can cause sleepiness and fatigue, irritability and depression. It can also negatively impacts your cognitive function so you feel like you have brain fog. Fresh air is good for promoting productivity and improving your mood. And when you have it circulating through your home and workplace, it makes it more difficult for bacteria and viruses to survive in the air. Lack of Fresh Air

Media Multitasking may Shrink your Brain

Research shows that media multitasking may shrink your brain. Using your laptop, smartphone, headphones and other electronic devices at the same time may change the structure of your brain. Some research shows it may affect the anterior cingulate cortex, the area of your brain associated with cognitive function and emotional control. So next time you are juggling all your electronic devices at the same time, think twice.
